Brand Overview — Who Are Viofo and Vantrue?

Viofo is a Chinese dash cam manufacturer that has been in the market since around 2014. They've built a strong reputation for releasing technically impressive cameras at competitive prices. Their focus is on sensor quality and video performance — typically Sony sensors, competitive resolution, good night vision — at price points that undercut competitors. Viofo cameras are widely available on Amazon India and have a strong community of users.

Vantrue is another Chinese brand but with a different positioning: they target the premium mid-market with more emphasis on build quality, multi-channel configurations, and professional features. Vantrue cameras typically feel more solid in hand, with heavier construction and more premium materials. They also have a strong presence in the rideshare/taxi market with their interior-camera configurations. Vantrue is available on Amazon India but in fewer variants than in the US market.

Viofo A229 Plus vs Vantrue N4 Pro — Full Head-to-Head

Video Quality

Viofo A229 Plus:

  • Front: 2560x1440 (2K) at 30fps
  • Rear: 1920x1080 (Full HD) at 30fps
  • Sensors: Sony STARVIS 2 (both channels) — the latest generation
  • Aperture: f/1.6 front
  • HDR: Yes

Vantrue N4 Pro:

  • Front: 3840x2160 (4K) at 30fps
  • Interior: 1080p IR night vision
  • Rear: 1920x1080 (Full HD) at 30fps
  • Sensors: Sony STARVIS (not STARVIS 2)
  • Aperture: f/1.8 front
  • HDR: Yes

Verdict on video quality: The Vantrue N4 Pro's 4K front resolution gives it a resolution advantage on paper, but the Viofo A229 Plus's Sony STARVIS 2 sensors (one generation newer than the N4 Pro's STARVIS) actually produce better low-light performance. In bright daylight, the N4 Pro's 4K footage is sharper. At night or in mixed light, the A229 Plus holds its own and often wins.

The A229 Plus does not have an interior channel — if you need three-channel coverage, the N4 Pro is the only choice.

GPS

Viofo A229 Plus: Built-in GPS. Speed, location, and time stamped to every frame. GPS data displayed in Viofo Player software with map overlay.

Vantrue N4 Pro: Built-in GPS (standard on all current variants). Same core functionality — speed, location, time. GPS playback via Vantrue app or PC software.

Verdict: Both cameras handle GPS equally well. Acquisition speed is similar (30–60 seconds from cold start). Neither has a meaningful advantage here.

Parking Mode

Viofo A229 Plus: Supports parking mode via hardwire kit. Three modes: motion detection, impact detection (G-sensor), and time-lapse. Dual-channel recording continues in parking mode — both front and rear are active.

Vantrue N4 Pro: Supports parking mode via hardwire kit. Three modes: same as A229 Plus. All three channels active during parking mode.

Verdict: The N4 Pro has a slight edge in parking mode because all three channels (front, interior, rear) remain active — useful for fleet operators or rideshare drivers who want interior coverage while parked. For private car owners, the A229 Plus's dual-channel parking mode is fully sufficient.

App and Software

Viofo App:

  • Wi-Fi direct connection to camera
  • Clip playback and download
  • Live view
  • Settings management
  • GPS playback (in Viofo Player desktop software)
  • Generally functional; occasional UI quirks

Vantrue App:

  • Wi-Fi direct connection
  • Clip playback and download
  • Live view
  • Settings management
  • Slightly more polished interface

Viofo Player (Desktop):

  • Free Windows and Mac software
  • GPS map playback with speed overlay
  • Clip management
  • Good for reviewing footage on a larger screen

Verdict: The Vantrue app is marginally more polished. Viofo's desktop Player software is better for serious GPS playback and clip review. Neither app is exceptional — both are functional but not as refined as Garmin's or Blackvue's platforms.

Price

ModelPrice in India
Viofo A229 Plus (dual channel)₹9,999–₹12,999
Vantrue N4 Pro (3 channel)₹18,999–₹22,999
Viofo A119 Mini 2 (single)₹4,499
Vantrue E1 Lite (dual)₹7,499–₹7,999

India Availability

Both brands are available on Amazon India. Viofo has more consistent availability and more variants in stock. Vantrue's selection on Amazon India is smaller than its international lineup — some models (particularly the E3 Pro and M4) are not consistently stocked on Amazon India and may require import or grey-market sourcing.

Verdict: Viofo has the edge on India availability and after-sale support via Amazon.

Build Quality

Viofo A229 Plus: Good build quality — solid plastic construction, clean buttons, reliable mount. Not premium but not cheap either.

Vantrue N4 Pro: Noticeably more premium build — heavier, better materials, more substantial feel in hand. Mount system is more robust.

Verdict: Vantrue wins on build quality. It's a tangible difference that justifies some of the price premium.

Which Should You Buy?

Buy the Viofo A229 Plus if:

  • You want the best video quality per rupee
  • Front and rear coverage is all you need
  • Night performance is a priority (STARVIS 2 matters)
  • Budget matters and ₹10,000–₹13,000 is your ceiling
  • You want the most widely available option in India

Buy the Vantrue N4 Pro if:

  • You need three-channel coverage (front, interior, rear)
  • You drive a rideshare or taxi and need interior footage
  • Build quality and premium feel matter to you
  • 4K front resolution is important for your use case
  • You're willing to spend ₹19,000–₹23,000

Stick with budget Viofo (A119 Mini 2) if:

  • Under ₹5,000 is your limit
  • Single channel (front only) is acceptable
  • You still want GPS and a Sony sensor

Final Verdict

For the vast majority of Indian private car owners, the Viofo A229 Plus is the better buy. Better sensors (STARVIS 2 vs STARVIS), better value, and better availability in India tip the scales firmly in Viofo's direction.

The Vantrue N4 Pro earns its premium price for a specific buyer: rideshare drivers, commercial vehicles, fleet operators, and anyone who specifically needs the interior camera channel or wants the most robust physical construction in the segment.

Both are excellent dash cams. Neither will disappoint. The choice comes down to what you specifically need — and at what price.
