To read a treadmill spec sheet, look at continuous HP rather than peak HP, a belt of at least 120 by 40 cm for jogging, a user weight rating around 20 percent above your weight, and a warranty that lists motor, frame and parts separately. Good home treadmills in India cost roughly ₹25,000-70,000, and the spec sheet tells you more than the brand does.

This guide is researched from manufacturer spec pages and Amazon India listings. The single most useful thing to verify before ordering is whether the listing states continuous HP at all, because many do not.

Prices below are approximate and can change during sales, so check the live price on Amazon before you buy.

Quick Pick: For jogging, aim for 2.5 HP or more continuous, a 125 by 42 cm belt, and 120 kg capacity, roughly ₹35,000-60,000. Browse treadmills with 120 kg capacity.

Continuous HP versus peak HP

Peak HP is the highest output the motor can reach for a short burst, such as at startup. Continuous HP, sometimes called rated or DC continuous duty, is what the motor can sustain. Listings often headline peak numbers like 4 HP or 6 HP, which can be double the continuous figure.

Rough guide for home use:

  • Walking only: 1.5 to 2 HP continuous is enough.
  • Jogging a few times a week: around 2 to 2.5 HP continuous.
  • Regular running, heavier users, or daily long sessions: 3 HP continuous or higher, usually in higher-priced machines.

If a listing gives only one HP figure, assume it is peak. Compare 3 HP treadmills.

Belt size by use

Belt length and width decide comfort. Walking works on a belt of 110 by 38 cm. For jogging, choose 120 by 40 cm or larger. For running, 130 by 42 cm or more helps longer strides. If you are above 6 feet, avoid belts shorter than 125 cm.

Look beyond dimensions to belt thickness, which affects durability and noise. Thin single-layer belts wear quickly, while multi-layer belts around 1.8 to 2 mm last longer. Treadmills with wide running belts.

User weight rating

A treadmill advertised for 100 kg is built so that someone at 100 kg is the upper limit, not a comfortable middle. Give yourself a margin of around 20 percent, and prefer higher ratings if you run, because impact load is more than your body weight. A 90 kg runner should look at 120 kg rated machines.

Rollers, frame and deck

Roller diameter of 38 to 45 mm is common in mid-range machines, with larger rollers reducing belt stress. A thick deck of 18 to 25 mm with cushioning reduces joint load. A heavy frame means stability at speed, and frame weight is often listed. A very light treadmill that claims high speed is usually underbuilt.

Incline and programmes

Manual incline is cheaper and works fine for occasional use. Motorised auto incline suits hill training but adds one more part that can fail. Preset programmes and apps are nice, but check that the machine also has plain manual mode with stable speed.

Reading the warranty

This is the part most buyers skip. Warranty is generally split into three or more parts:

  1. Motor, commonly the longest, sometimes advertised as long-term or lifetime.
  2. Frame, often several years.
  3. Parts and electronics, which includes belt, console and sensors, often 6 to 12 months.

Lifetime motor claims may carry conditions, such as the need to buy a service plan or limits on weekly usage. Ask whether labour is covered, whether visits are free, and how the claim is made. A longer warranty from a brand with no service centre in your city is worth little. Treadmill with long motor warranty.

Power, space and installation

Check the power rating and whether you need a stabiliser, since low voltage can damage controllers. Measure the unfolded footprint, usually around 150 by 70 cm, plus clearance behind. Heavy treadmills need two people, so confirm installation support.

Footfall thuds travel through flat slabs to the neighbours below, which is why a thick rubber pad under the frame is part of the real cost. Rubber pad for the treadmill base.

Features that matter less than they look

Large touchscreens, built-in speakers and dozens of programmes rarely decide durability. Foldability matters if space is tight, but folding mechanisms add a possible weak point. A simple console on a solid machine beats a showy one on a flimsy frame.

Who should buy which tier

Walkers can save with a lower tier and a 2 HP continuous motor. Regular joggers should step to the middle tier. Heavy users and daily runners should skip the cheap end entirely.

Recommendation

Shortlist three models, write down continuous HP, belt size, weight rating and warranty split, then call the brand to ask about service in your city. The winner is the machine with an honest continuous rating and local service. Treadmill belt lubricant for upkeep.
