Summer Prep Checklist for AC, Cooler and Fridge India 2026

Last verified: July 2026Prices checked on Amazon India

Service your AC and cooler in February, fix cheap fridge faults before March, and buy a 1.5 ton inverter AC (roughly ₹36,000-50,000) early rather than in the May rush.

Start your summer prep in February: book an AC jet service (roughly ₹600-1,500 per unit), clean the cooler tank and pads, fix cheap fridge faults, and buy any replacement appliance (a 1.5 ton inverter AC runs roughly ₹36,000-50,000) before the April-May rush when installation slots vanish. Doing this in order costs far less than an emergency repair in a 44 degree week.

This checklist is researched from manufacturer service guidance and typical Indian repair practice, not from our own workshop. Before you book anything, check your AC's age and refrigerant type on the outdoor unit sticker, because that decides whether a gas top-up is even sensible.

Prices below are approximate and can change during sales, so check the live price on Amazon before you buy.

Quick Pick: If only one thing gets done, make it the split AC service: filters, indoor coil, outdoor coil and drain line. If the unit is over 10 years old and non-inverter, compare it against a new 1.5 ton 5-star inverter AC in the roughly ₹40,000-50,000 range.

February: the AC service that actually matters

A proper service is not a quick spray of the filters. Ask the technician for a jet-pump wash of both the indoor evaporator coil and the outdoor condenser, a drain-pipe flush, and a check of the fan motor capacitor. A weak capacitor is the classic reason an AC hums but the outdoor fan never spins, and it is a cheap part when caught early.

Be firm about gas. A split AC is a sealed system, so low gas means a leak, not normal consumption. Topping up without finding the leak just resets the clock. Insist the technician measures pressure and leak-tests the flare joints. Newer units use R32, older ones R22 or R410A, and the gas type changes the cost of any refill.

Two cheap upgrades are worth doing now. A voltage stabilizer rated for a split AC protects the compressor where supply swings, and a shade or cover over the outdoor unit stops it baking on a terrace. Keep roughly a foot of clear space behind the outdoor unit, or the condenser cannot dump heat.

March: cooler and fan housekeeping

Desert coolers fail in predictable ways. Drain the tank, scrub off the scale, replace the honeycomb or aspen pads (they harden after a season and stop wetting evenly), and test the water pump and float valve. A pump costs little, but a dry-running pump burns out in minutes, so confirm the water level switch works.

If you are buying a new cooler, the large premium ones that cover a 300-plus sq ft hall cost roughly ₹15,000-20,000, while small personal coolers are fine for a bedroom only in dry cities. Check the large desert air cooler tank size and look for a honeycomb pad with a drain plug that actually reaches the tank bottom. Coolers are the wrong tool in coastal humidity, so if you live in Mumbai or Chennai skip straight to the AC.

Fridge: repair the small things, replace the old compressor

Fridges rarely fail without warning. Run the dollar-bill test on the door gasket: close the door on a bank note, and if it slides out easily, the gasket is leaking cold air and costing you units every day. A new gasket is a modest repair.

Pull the fridge out and vacuum the back condenser grille or the bottom grille, depending on design. Dust here forces the compressor to run longer, which is the single most common cause of rising bills in older units. On direct-cool models, defrost fully before summer, because a thick ice layer insulates the cooling plate.

Know the repair-versus-replace line. A relay, capacitor or thermostat swap is a small repair. A compressor replacement on a 10-year-old single-door fridge can approach what a new one costs, so replace instead. If you are shopping, a 5-star frost-free double door refrigerator usually runs roughly ₹25,000-40,000 and saves meaningful electricity over a 3-star older model.

What to buy early, and what to keep

Buy early: the AC and any fridge. Both need delivery and, for the AC, a free installation slot, and brands stretch installation to a week or more in peak season. Ordering in late winter also lets you check the copper-piping and stand charges at your own pace instead of agreeing to whatever the installer quotes in May.

Keep and repair: fans, a working cooler, and any fridge under around 8 years old. A BLDC ceiling fan is an energy-saving upgrade over time, but it is a gradual swap, not a summer-prep emergency.

If the AC is needed in a rented flat, ask the landlord who owns the stabilizer and the stand, because moving a split AC costs both an uninstall and a re-gas visit. For new purchases, a 1.5 ton 3-star inverter split AC is a sensible middle path when the 5-star premium is too much for a room used only at night.

Recommendation

Give yourself three weekends. February: AC service and stabilizer. March: cooler pads, pump, fridge gasket and coil clean. Late March: decide on replacements, ordering the AC first. If your AC is under 7 years old and cools properly after a jet service, spend nothing more; if it is 10-plus years and non-inverter, a new inverter model pays back through the bill within a few summers.
