For most Indian kitchens, a convection microwave at roughly Rs 10,000-20,000 is the better buy because it reheats, cooks and bakes in one box, while an OTG at roughly Rs 8,000-14,000 only makes sense if baking and grilling are your main use. This comparison is researched from how each appliance heats and typical Indian cooking habits, not hands-on use, so check the capacity in litres and the maximum temperature on any model before choosing.

Quick Pick: A 28 litre convection microwave, roughly Rs 13,000-20,000, covers reheating, baking and grilling in one appliance for a family of four.
How each one heats
A microwave uses electromagnetic waves that make water molecules in food vibrate, heating the food from within. It is fast and efficient for reheating, defrosting, boiling water and steaming vegetables, but does not brown food on its own.
An OTG (oven toaster griller) uses electric heating rods at the top and bottom, sometimes with a rotisserie. It heats the air and the food surface like a small oven, so it can bake, toast, grill and brown. It is slow to preheat and takes longer to cook, but it browns and crisps well.
A convection microwave combines both: microwave mode, a convection fan and heater for baking, and a grill. This is the sweet spot for many homes.
What each does best
- Reheating rice, dal, curry, tea: microwave, by a wide margin. An OTG will take much longer and dry food out.
- Defrosting: microwave.
- Baking cakes, cookies and breads: OTG or convection microwave. A standard microwave cannot bake.
- Grilling paneer tikka, kebabs and sandwiches: OTG or a microwave with a grill.
- Toasting and roasting nuts or papad: OTG.
- Steaming momos or idli: microwave with a suitable container.
Baking quality
An OTG gives more control over top and bottom heat, with typical temperature ranges of 100-250 degrees C, and you can bake larger or multiple trays in 40-60 litre models. A convection microwave bakes well for cakes and cookies at up to around 200-220 degrees, but its cavity is smaller and the turntable can limit pan size. For regular baking of large cakes or pizzas for a family, a 40-60 litre OTG is stronger.
Cost and space
OTGs of 20-30 litres are inexpensive, but larger and better ones with convection fans reach Rs 10,000-14,000. Convection microwaves of 25-32 litres cost Rs 12,000-20,000. A solo microwave is cheaper still, but it cannot bake.
On the counter, a 28 litre microwave is around 50 cm wide and 40 cm deep, while a 45-60 litre OTG is bigger and runs hot on its outer surface, so it needs clearance. In a small kitchen, one appliance is better than two.
Power and running cost
A microwave draws 1-1.5 kW but runs for short periods. An OTG uses 1.2-2 kW for much longer, so baking a cake costs more power than reheating five times. Neither is expensive to run, but an OTG used for 45 minutes every day will add to the bill. Check your socket and load, as both need a 10-16 amp point.
Brands to shortlist
- Convection microwaves: IFB, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and Bajaj, at roughly Rs 12,000-20,000. See IFB convection microwave, LG convection microwave and Samsung convection microwave.
- OTGs: Bajaj, Morphy Richards, Prestige and Philips, at roughly Rs 8,000-14,000 for the better 35-60 litre models. See Bajaj OTG 60 litre and Morphy Richards OTG.
Who should buy which
- Convection microwave: busy households, anyone who reheats daily, small kitchens, occasional bakers.
- OTG: home bakers, families who bake large cakes, pizzas or breads weekly, or people who already own a microwave.
- Both: if you bake a lot and also reheat a lot, owning a basic solo microwave and a 45-60 litre OTG often serves better than one compromise appliance, though it costs more space.
An honest trade-off
A convection microwave is more versatile, but the baking capacity is limited by the cavity and turntable, and some units bake unevenly. An OTG bakes better and bigger but is slow and useless for reheating. If you choose only one and cook mostly Indian food, the microwave wins.
Safety and care
Use microwave-safe containers, never metal in microwave mode. In OTGs, use metal trays. In convection microwaves, check the manual for which accessories go with which mode. Clean the cavity after oily grilling and do not leave the appliance running empty.
Recommendation
For most Indian homes, choose a 25-30 litre convection microwave. If baking is your hobby, buy an OTG of 45-60 litres in addition. Compare OTG oven 45 litre listings with convection microwaves before deciding.
