Inverter AC vs Non-Inverter AC: Which to Buy India 2026
Buy an inverter AC if you run it more than a few hours a day; a fixed-speed AC only makes sense for very light use, and even then the saving at purchase is small.

An inverter AC is the better buy for almost every Indian household because it cuts electricity use by roughly a quarter to a third compared with a fixed-speed AC, usually for only Rs 3,000-8,000 more at purchase. This comparison is researched from how the two compressor designs work and typical star-rating data, so your own saving depends on hours of use and the tariff slab on your meter.
Prices below are approximate and can change during sales, so check the live price on Amazon before you buy.
Quick Pick: Choose a 1.5 ton 3 star inverter split AC, roughly Rs 38,000-48,000, unless you will run the AC under 300 hours a year.
How each compressor behaves
A fixed-speed (non-inverter) compressor has two states: fully on or fully off. When the room reaches the set temperature, the compressor shuts down, the room warms by a degree or two, and it restarts at full power. Every restart draws a surge of current, and the room temperature swings up and down.
An inverter compressor changes its motor speed. It starts fast to pull the room down, then slows to hold the set temperature without switching off. There are fewer start-stop cycles, the temperature stays steadier, and the AC draws less power while maintaining the room. The outdoor unit also runs quieter in the maintaining phase.
One point worth knowing: the "inverter" here is the variable-speed motor drive, and it has nothing to do with a home backup inverter. An inverter AC does not run on power backup any better.
The running cost method
Use this simple calculation for your own flat instead of trusting a headline percentage.
- Find the AC's rated power from the label: a 1.5 ton fixed-speed 3 star draws around 1.5-1.7 kW when running; an inverter averages lower across a day.
- Estimate real hours: a bedroom AC used 8 hours on a hot night may have the compressor working 5-6 of them.
- Multiply by your tariff. At Rs 7-9 per unit, a fixed-speed 1.5 ton used 8 hours a day for 150 days can cost around Rs 12,000-16,000 a year in some cities, while an inverter might cost Rs 8,000-11,000.
- Subtract the two yearly figures and divide the purchase price gap by that saving.
If the price gap is Rs 5,000 and the yearly saving is Rs 3,000-4,000, the inverter pays for itself in under two summers. After that it is simply cheaper to own. These are illustrative figures, so plug in your own tariff and hours.
Where inverter wins
- Daily use above 4-5 hours: the saving is quick and real.
- Power stability: most inverter models tolerate voltage swings better and can restart gently, which suits areas with fluctuating supply.
- Comfort: steadier temperature and less on-off noise, which matters in a bedroom.
- Resale and range: nearly all new launches from Daikin, LG, Samsung, Voltas, Blue Star and Hitachi are inverter, so you get more choice in features such as Wi-Fi, 4-in-1 convertible cooling and better filters.
Where non-inverter still has a case
Fixed-speed ACs are now a small part of the market, but a few buyers still find them reasonable.
- Very light use: a guest room or holiday home used a few weeks a year. If the AC runs under 300 hours annually, the saving on power may never recover the extra purchase cost.
- Rental flats: if you are leaving in a year and the landlord will keep the unit, a lower-priced fixed-speed model is the cheaper commitment.
- Repair fear: a fixed-speed outdoor unit has a simpler board. The inverter board is the costliest part to replace outside warranty, which can run to several thousand rupees, so check the compressor and PCB warranty period (most brands offer a long compressor warranty) before you buy.
Even so, non-inverter 1.5 ton AC options on Amazon are shrinking, and the price gap is narrow enough that most buyers who think they are "light users" end up running the AC more than they planned.
Star rating matters as much as the compressor
An inverter with a poor rating can cost more to run than a good fixed-speed model, so read the BEE label. A 5 star inverter gives the lowest yearly bill but costs more upfront, often Rs 6,000-10,000 above a 3 star. The break-even is longer for light use, so match the star rating to hours:
- Under 4 hours a day: 3 star inverter.
- 6-10 hours a day, especially for a hall or home office: 5 star inverter. See 5 star inverter AC listings.
- Night-only use in a bedroom: 3 star is usually enough.
Tonnage and copper coils
Inverters handle slightly oversized capacity better, but do not use that to buy a 2 ton for a 1 ton room. If you are unsure about size, our rule of thumb is 1 ton to around 110 sq ft and 1.5 ton to around 180 sq ft. Also prefer copper condenser coils over aluminium, which most mainstream inverter models already use, since copper conducts heat better and repairs more easily.
Budget view
- Fixed-speed 1.5 ton 3 star: roughly Rs 30,000-38,000.
- Inverter 1.5 ton 3 star: roughly Rs 36,000-48,000.
- Inverter 1.5 ton 5 star: roughly Rs 42,000-58,000.
- Premium inverter with Wi-Fi and better filters: roughly Rs 50,000-65,000.
If you want connected features, look at Wi-Fi inverter AC listings after you settle the compressor question. For a 1 ton room, compare 1 ton inverter AC options, and if you run the AC all day in a large hall, a 2 ton inverter AC can be the better fit.
Recommendation
Buy an inverter AC unless the unit will sit idle most of the year. For a bedroom, a 3 star 1.5 ton inverter is the sweet spot; for a hall or home office that runs all day, move to 5 star. Treat fixed-speed as an exception for guest rooms and short rentals, not the default.
