The best tablets for digital art in India are the iPad and iPad Air with an Apple Pencil, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S series with its included S Pen, which cost roughly ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 and differ mostly in apps and pen feel.

This guide is researched from specifications and artist community feedback, not hands-on tested. Before buying, check which pen the tablet supports and whether it is included, because Apple Pencil models are sold separately and only certain iPads accept each version.

Prices below are approximate and can change during sales, so check the live price on Amazon before you buy.

Quick Pick: The iPad Air with Apple Pencil Pro or USB-C, roughly ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 including the pen, is the best balance of screen, pen and Procreate for most illustrators. See iPad Air on Amazon.

What actually matters for drawing

Three things shape a drawing tablet: pen latency (how quickly the line follows your hand), the screen surface (how the nib feels) and the software. Apple Pencil latency is among the lowest in tablets, and Samsung's S Pen is close behind. Software is the bigger divider: Procreate is iPad-only and loved for its brushes and speed, while Samsung tablets run Clip Studio Paint, Infinite Painter, Autodesk Sketchbook and Krita, good for comics and manga work.

1. iPad Air: best overall for illustration

The iPad Air with an M-series chip, roughly ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 depending on screen size, gives a laminated display, tight pen response and full Procreate with plenty of headroom. Add an Apple Pencil Pro or the Pencil USB-C, roughly ₹8,000 to ₹12,000. The trade-off is a glossy screen, so a matte film helps, and 128 GB or 256 GB fills quickly with large canvases, so budget for 256 GB. See iPad Air.

2. iPad (standard): best entry into Procreate

The base iPad, roughly ₹34,000 to ₹45,000, supports the Apple Pencil USB-C and runs Procreate well. Its display is not laminated, so there is a visible gap between nib and image, and colours are less rich. For a student starting out, it is fine; for a professional, the Air is worth the jump. Compare iPad 10th generation.

3. Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S10 series: best with pen included

Samsung includes the S Pen in the box, which is a real saving of ₹8,000 or more. The Tab S9 FE, roughly ₹30,000 to ₹40,000, is a value pick, and the S10+ and Ultra with AMOLED screens, roughly ₹70,000 to ₹1,10,000, suit larger canvases. The S Pen attaches magnetically and needs no charging. Weaknesses: fewer professional-grade painting apps than iPad and lighter brush engines. See Samsung Galaxy Tab S.

4. iPad Pro: only for specific needs

The iPad Pro costs roughly ₹1,00,000 and up and adds a 120 Hz OLED and a faster chip. Illustrators rarely need it unless they paint 100-layer 4K canvases or want the best colour. For most people, the Air is nearly the same drawing experience. Check iPad Pro only if you also edit video.

Screen finish: glossy glass versus paper feel

Glass is slippery, and many artists find it harder to control lines. A matte film adds friction that resembles paper, with a slight loss in sharpness and nib wear. A paper-like screen protector costs roughly ₹1,500 to ₹3,000, and replacement pen nibs are cheap, but matte films wear nibs faster, so stock a spare set.

Storage and RAM realities

A 4K canvas with 100 layers can use a gigabyte or more. Procreate's layer count depends on RAM and canvas size, so a tablet with 8 GB gives noticeably more layers than one with 4 GB. Pick 256 GB if you work on large files and back up to cloud or an external drive. A USB-C hub helps for transferring files and adding an SD card.

Who should skip a tablet for art

Skip tablets if you mostly produce print-grade work on desktop software like Photoshop with plugins; a screen drawing monitor or a pen display may serve you better. Skip a budget Android tablet under ₹15,000: pen lag and poor palm rejection will frustrate you. Skip cheap unbranded styluses, which lack pressure sensitivity.

Recommendation

Choose the iPad Air with an Apple Pencil for the best overall art experience, the base iPad as a student starter, and a Galaxy Tab S9 FE or S10 if you want the pen included and use Clip Studio Paint. Start with this drawing tablet search and choose 256 GB.
