Upgrade your kit lens with a 24-70 mm f/2.8 at roughly ₹80,000 to ₹2,00,000 if you need low-light performance and strong background blur, or a 24-105 mm f/4 at roughly ₹55,000 to ₹1,40,000 if you value lighter weight and extra reach. Many hobbyists with a decent kit lens will see a smaller gain than they expect and may be better off buying a prime.

Everything here comes from desk research on published lens specifications, with no lens put through a field trial. Check your mount and sensor size first, and ask honestly whether your current kit lens is the real limit.

Prices below are approximate and can change during sales, so check the live price on Amazon before you buy.

Quick Pick: A third-party 28-75 mm or 24-70 mm f/2.8 such as Tamron's 28-75mm f/2.8 or Sigma's 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art on Sony at roughly ₹80,000-95,000 gives the best value. Browse 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses on Amazon.

f/2.8 versus f/4

An f/2.8 lens lets in twice as much light as an f/4 lens, which helps indoors, at dusk and at weddings, and gives more background blur. It also costs more and weighs more, often around 800 to 900 grams against 500 to 700 grams for an f/4. For travel, hiking and daytime use, an f/4 lens is lighter and cheaper with a longer range. If you rarely shoot in dim light, you may not need f/2.8.

Modern cameras handle high ISO well, so the one stop advantage matters less than a decade ago, but blur and shutter speed still benefit.

The 24-70 mm f/2.8 class

  • Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II: a lighter, sharper professional lens at roughly ₹1,90,000-2,10,000. Search Sony GM zoom.
  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: a small, light lens at roughly ₹80,000-90,000, losing a little wide angle. Search Tamron 28-75.
  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art: a sharp, reasonably priced lens for Sony E and L mounts. Search Sigma 24-70.
  • Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM: a stabilised pro lens at roughly ₹2,00,000 and above. Search Canon RF 24-70.
  • Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S: an excellent lens at a high price. Search Nikon Z 24-70.

The 24-105 mm f/4 class

  • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: a versatile lens with stabilisation at roughly ₹1,20,000-1,40,000. Canon also sells a cheaper f/4-7.1 STM version at roughly ₹40,000.
  • Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G: a good all-round lens at roughly ₹1,10,000.
  • Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S: a compact, sharp lens often sold in kits, costing roughly ₹55,000-65,000. Search Nikon Z 24-70 f/4.

These suit travel, family, landscape and video where a smaller bag matters.

Stabilisation

If your camera body has in-body stabilisation (IBIS), the lens does not need its own. For bodies without it, such as some APS-C models, a stabilised lens is useful. Check the body and lens specification.

Weight and balance

A heavy f/2.8 zoom on a small body feels front-heavy. On compact bodies like the Sony A6700 or Canon R10, a lighter lens balances better. Try the combination in a store before committing.

Compare with primes

A pair of fast primes, such as 35 mm and 85 mm at f/1.8, often costs less than a pro zoom and gives better low-light and blur. You swap lenses more often, but image quality per rupee is higher. If you shoot portraits or low-light stills, primes can be a better upgrade than a zoom. Browse 35mm f/1.8 primes.

Third-party versus brand

Third-party zooms from Sigma and Tamron offer strong value on Sony E mount, with sharp optics and lower prices. On Canon RF, third-party full-frame autofocus lenses are limited, so you often buy Canon. Nikon Z has growing third-party support. Always check compatibility with your body's firmware and the warranty status in India.

Who should skip the upgrade

If your kit lens produces images you are happy with and your struggle is subject choice rather than quality, a pro zoom will not transform results. If you shoot mostly video in good light, a kit lens may suffice. If budget is under ₹60,000, consider a prime or a lighter f/4 lens instead.

Recommendation

Buy a 24-70 mm f/2.8 if you shoot weddings, events or low-light scenes and can carry the weight. Buy a 24-105 mm f/4 if you travel and value reach and portability. Choose third-party on Sony for value, and confirm mount, stabilisation and warranty before ordering.
