The best retrofit smart lock for a rental flat in India is a Yale Linus or SwitchBot style lock that fits over your existing deadbolt, roughly ₹15,000-20,000 with a keypad or hub, because it needs no drilling and can be removed when you move out. It only works if your door already has a compatible deadbolt or mortise lock.

I researched this from brand specifications and owner reports and have not tested these locks. Before buying, check what type of lock your door has, the thumb-turn shape, and your landlord's permission, because an incompatible thumb-turn is the most common reason a retrofit fails.

Prices below are approximate and can change during sales, so check the live price on Amazon before you buy.

Quick Pick: A retrofit lock that clamps over your thumb-turn with a keypad accessory, roughly ₹15,000-20,000. Check retrofit smart locks on Amazon.

How a retrofit lock works

A retrofit lock mounts on the inside of the door. It replaces or covers your thumb-turn and uses a small motor to turn the existing deadbolt. Outside, your original key still works, and you add a keypad, fingerprint reader or app control.

Installation is usually adhesive or clamp-based, with no drilling. When you move, you peel it off and the door returns to its original state, which is exactly what landlords want.

The compatibility test before anything else

Retrofit locks suit doors with a standard deadbolt or mortise lock that has a thumb-turn on the inside. They do not suit:

  • Multi-point locking doors common in newer flats, where several bolts move at once.
  • Locks with an interior key-only cylinder and no thumb-turn.
  • Doors that need a hard push to latch, since the motor may stall.

Photograph your inside lock and compare the shape to the maker's compatibility list. Some brands send a trial adapter set.

1. Yale Linus smart lock, polished retrofit

Roughly ₹15,000-20,000 with a hub or keypad accessory. It installs on the inside of the door, supports app control and guest access, and the exterior stays unchanged. It suits standard apartment doors with a deadbolt.

The trade-off is compatibility: it works with a limited range of lock types, and some require an extra adapter. See Yale Linus smart lock.

2. SwitchBot lock range, flexible and adhesive

Roughly ₹12,000-20,000 depending on bundle. SwitchBot's lock attaches with adhesive and works with many thumb-turns, and bundles can add a keypad and hub for remote access.

The downside is adhesive reliability in Indian summers; hot, humid conditions may weaken the hold on some doors. Browse SwitchBot smart lock.

3. Keypad and fingerprint add-ons

Roughly ₹5,000-8,000 on top. A retrofit lock alone gives you app control, but a keypad or fingerprint reader gives you a way in without a phone. For guests, cooks and house-help, this is essential. See smart lock keypad fingerprint add-on.

Limits you should know

Retrofit locks do not change your door's strength. They add convenience, not security. The original deadbolt remains the main barrier, so if it is weak, upgrading is better than adding a smart layer.

Battery life is typically several months on AA or CR123 cells, depending on usage. Keep a spare set, and know where the manual override key is. Wi-Fi control often needs a hub, and without it you use Bluetooth within range only.

Door and landlord reality

Check the lease. Many landlords are fine with a removable device, but some forbid altering the lock. Take photos before installing, and keep the original thumb-turn if it gets replaced. Use a small amount of removable adhesive and clean the surface first. See removable mounting adhesive.

Power cuts and Wi-Fi outages

The lock itself works on batteries, so a power cut does not lock you out. Remote features need Wi-Fi though, so keep a mechanical key and an offline method such as a keypad. A smart plug-based UPS for the hub is a small extra worth considering. See mini UPS for Wi-Fi router.

Who should skip a retrofit lock

Skip it if your door uses a multi-point lock, if you do not have a thumb-turn, or if your landlord forbids changes. In those cases, a smart door sensor and camera may be a better rental security upgrade.

Also skip if you only want keyless entry occasionally: a simple key lockbox costs far less.

Recommendation

Choose Yale Linus if your lock is on its compatibility list and you want a polished app. Choose a SwitchBot bundle if you want flexibility and a keypad in one purchase. Always add a keypad or fingerprint reader, check compatibility with photos, and keep your original key.
