A true HEPA air purifier with a washable pre-filter and an activated carbon layer, priced roughly ₹10,000-40,000 from brands such as Philips, Coway, Sharp, Blueair or Dyson, is the best answer to pet hair, dander and litter odour in an Indian home. The pre-filter and the yearly filter bill matter more than the headline CADR.

Pet-hair performance is exactly what a listing cannot show, so these notes are researched from brand specifications and listings instead of living with each purifier next to a pet. Before buying, check whether the pre-filter can be washed or vacuumed, because pet hair blocks cheap purifiers within days.

Prices below are approximate and can change during sales, so check the live price on Amazon before you buy.

Quick Pick: A purifier with a washable mesh pre-filter, a True HEPA filter, a carbon layer and a CADR that covers your room, roughly ₹15,000-30,000. Browse pet air purifiers on Amazon.

What pets add to the air

Three things matter: loose hair, which is large and clogs the intake; dander, tiny skin flakes that float and trigger allergies; and odour, from litter boxes, wet fur and accidents. A purifier handles them in stages: a pre-filter for hair, HEPA for dander, and carbon for smells.

1. Philips air purifier range

Philips sells a wide range of purifiers with pre-filter, HEPA and carbon, priced roughly ₹10,000-35,000. Many include air quality sensors and auto modes. Filter replacement is not cheap, so check the cost. Philips air purifiers.

2. Coway Airmega

Coway's Airmega models, around ₹18,000-35,000, have a washable pre-filter, a HEPA layer and a carbon filter, with auto mode and a filter life indicator. They are well regarded for quiet operation. Coway Airmega purifiers.

3. Sharp Plasmacluster range

Sharp's purifiers add plasmacluster ion technology to HEPA and carbon filters. Prices run roughly ₹12,000-30,000. Ionisers are optional, so check whether the unit lets you turn it off. Sharp air purifiers.

4. Blueair Blue Pure

Blueair uses a washable fabric pre-filter around a cylindrical filter, which is easy for pet owners. Prices are roughly ₹20,000-40,000. Fewer features, but simple and strong airflow. Blueair purifiers.

5. Dyson purifier fans

Dyson's purifiers cost roughly ₹35,000-60,000 and act as fans too, with sealed HEPA and carbon filters. They are expensive, but look sleek and have app control. Dyson air purifiers.

Pre-filters, hair and dander

A washable pre-filter catches hair and larger dust and extends HEPA filter life. Vacuum or rinse it every week if you have shedding dogs or cats. Without one, hair coats the HEPA layer and cuts airflow.

True HEPA, rated H13 or at least 99.97 percent at 0.3 micron, captures dander. Avoid unclear terms like HEPA-type.

Carbon for odour

Litter box smell and wet dog odour are gases, not particles. Only activated carbon removes them, and thin carbon sheets saturate within months. Look for a thicker carbon layer or granules. If odour is your main concern, a purifier is a supplement to cleaning, not a replacement.

CADR and room size

CADR, the clean air delivery rate, tells you how much air is cleaned per hour. For a 150 to 200 sq ft room, a CADR of 300 to 400 m3 per hour is a reasonable target. Pet owners should size up, since hair and dander levels are higher. Place the purifier away from walls and near where the pet sleeps.

Noise and filter cost

Check the noise level at low and high speed, with 25 to 35 dB at low and around 50 to 60 dB at high. Filters often cost roughly ₹2,500-8,000 a set, replaced every 6 to 12 months. Pet homes may need earlier changes. Add the cost over three years before comparing models. Replacement HEPA filters.

Who should skip a purifier

If your main problem is hair on furniture, a good vacuum or a pet-hair roller solves it, not a purifier. Allergy sufferers should also talk to a doctor.

Placement for pet homes

Put the purifier where the animal spends most of its time, with at least 30 cm of clear space around the intake. Keep it off the floor if a dog can lick or knock it, and away from the litter tray so the carbon is not saturated by the strongest odour source. Close the door of a bedroom if the purifier is meant for it.

Recommendation

Choose a purifier with a washable pre-filter, True HEPA and thick carbon, sized for your room, and budget for filter replacement. Clean the pre-filter weekly.
