Best AC for a 2BHK Flat India 2026
For most 2BHK flats, two 1.5 ton inverter splits (one per bedroom) or one 1.5 ton in the hall plus a 1 ton in the main bedroom works best, roughly Rs 35,000-55,000 per unit for a 3 star or 5 star model.

The best AC setup for a 2BHK flat in India is usually two inverter splits, a 1.5 ton unit for the hall and a 1 ton or 1.5 ton unit for the main bedroom, at roughly Rs 35,000-55,000 each, because one AC cannot cool rooms separated by doors and a passage. This guide is researched from brand ranges and standard room-sizing rules, not hands-on testing, so measure your own room dimensions and note which wall faces the afternoon sun before you pick tonnage.

Quick Pick: For a typical 2BHK, buy a 1.5 ton 3 star inverter split for the hall and a 1 ton inverter split for the bedroom you sleep in most. Budget roughly Rs 70,000-95,000 for the pair.
Start with the rooms, not the flat
A 2BHK is sold by bedrooms, but an AC cools air in one room. A typical Indian 2BHK has a hall of around 150-200 sq ft, a master bedroom of 120-150 sq ft and a second bedroom of 100-120 sq ft. Kitchen and bathrooms rarely need cooling. So the question is not "what AC for 2BHK" but "which of these three rooms do you actually sit or sleep in during summer."
A rough tonnage guide for top-floor-free, normal-ceiling rooms: up to 110 sq ft suits a 1 ton, 110-180 sq ft suits a 1.5 ton, and anything above 180 sq ft or with a west-facing wall and no balcony shade is better with a 1.5 ton at 5 star or a 2 ton. These are rules of thumb used by most brands, so treat them as a starting point.
Bedroom plus hall: the layout that works
If you live in the flat full time, the hall is where the family sits from evening to late night, and the master bedroom is where you sleep. Those two rooms are the ones that justify an AC each.
- Hall (150-200 sq ft): a 1.5 ton inverter is the safe choice. Halls often open into a dining area or balcony, which adds heat load that a 1 ton will not beat in May.
- Master bedroom (120-150 sq ft): a 1.5 ton if it has an outside wall facing west or sits under the terrace, otherwise a 1 ton is enough and will use less power at night.
- Second bedroom: skip the AC unless a child studies there in summer or a parent needs it. A good ceiling fan and a cheap cooler-style approach is not an option here, so decide based on who really uses the room.
Check the 1.5 ton 5 star inverter AC listings if the hall is your main living space and the AC will run ten hours or more a day, because the extra purchase cost comes back through the power bill.
1 ton vs 1.5 ton for the same room
This is where people overspend or underspend.
An oversized AC is not a disaster with an inverter compressor, because it simply runs at lower speed once the room cools. An undersized one runs flat out and still struggles when it is hot outside. So when a room sits on the border, say 120 sq ft with one external wall, go to 1.5 ton. The extra cost is usually Rs 4,000-7,000 and it covers you on hot days.
The exception is a small bedroom under 100 sq ft with a shaded wall. A 1.5 ton there cools quickly, switches to low speed and can feel clammy in humid cities such as Mumbai or Chennai because dehumidification suffers when the compressor ramps down too far. A 1 ton suits it better.
One AC or two
Some buyers try a single large AC (a 2 ton) in the hall and leave the bedroom doors open. In a 2BHK with a passage and doors, this does not work well: the cooled air stays mostly in the hall, bedrooms stay at 30 degrees or more, and you run the unit at full load. If budget is tight, the sensible compromise is one 1.5 ton in the main bedroom now and a second unit next summer, not one big unit for the whole flat.
If the flat is a compact one with a hall and a bedroom opening onto each other through a wide arch, a single 2 ton inverter AC can be reasonable. Anything with doors that stay shut says two ACs.
Brands and ranges worth shortlisting
Researched at range level, the strong all-round names for flats are Daikin, LG, Samsung, Voltas, Blue Star, Hitachi, Carrier and Panasonic.
- Daikin and Hitachi tend to cost a little more but are known for build quality and service in metros. Look at their 3 star and 5 star inverter lines, roughly Rs 42,000-60,000 for 1.5 ton.
- LG and Samsung offer dual-inverter or wide-range inverter models, often with Wi-Fi, in the Rs 38,000-55,000 band for 1.5 ton.
- Voltas and Blue Star are strong on service reach in smaller cities and on adjustable-capacity models, around Rs 35,000-50,000 for 1.5 ton.
For lower-floor flats, see Voltas inverter AC and Blue Star inverter AC listings. Adjustable-capacity models let the AC step between a lower and higher tonnage, which suits a room used both as a bedroom and a study.
Check these 2BHK-specific points before ordering
- Outdoor unit location: many flats have a narrow AC ledge or a duct. Measure it, because a 1.5 ton outdoor unit is bigger than a 1 ton, and the society may restrict where it can go.
- Pipe run: the hall AC often sits far from the ledge. Beyond the free copper length (usually around 3 meters), you pay per foot, so choose the wall that keeps piping short.
- Electrical load: two 1.5 ton ACs plus a geyser can trip a 3 kW supply on a shared meter, so check your sanctioned load and the MCB.
- Star rating: a 3 star is fine for bedroom use of 6-8 hours a night. For the hall used all day, 5 star saves meaningfully, but compare the added cost with your hours of use.
Recommendation
For most 2BHK families: a 1.5 ton 3 star inverter in the hall and a 1 ton 3 star inverter in the master bedroom, with the second bedroom left without one. If the bedroom has a west wall or sits under the terrace, make it a 1.5 ton as well. If you can only afford one now, buy the bedroom unit first, because sleeping cool matters more than sitting cool. Browse the 3 star 1.5 ton inverter AC listings and compare installation terms before you decide.
